{"id":45614,"date":"2024-05-17T16:13:32","date_gmt":"2024-05-17T20:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=45614"},"modified":"2024-05-17T16:13:43","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T20:13:43","slug":"florida-taxwatch-calls-6-polk-county-projects-in-state-budget-turkeys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2024\/05\/17\/florida-taxwatch-calls-6-polk-county-projects-in-state-budget-turkeys\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida TaxWatch calls 6 Polk County projects in state budget &#8216;turkeys&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six Polk County projects in this year\u2019s state budget appear on the annual \u201cTurkey Watch\u201d list released Wednesday by Florida TaxWatch.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"197\" height=\"255\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/images-8.jpeg?resize=197%2C255&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45615\" style=\"width:335px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nonprofit and nonpartisan, business-backed group each year publishes a list of legislative appropriations that it says \u201cbypass the normal appropriations process or circumvent or violate procedures established by the Legislature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $117.5 billion budget passed by the Florida Legislature contains 450 appropriations totaling $854.6 million that qualified as budget &#8220;turkeys,&#8221; Florida TaxWatch said. The projects are generally not statewide in scope or are not core functions of state government, TaxWatch said in the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Polk County projects on the list are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Relocation of Lewis Matthews Park in Davenport, $4 million.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expansion of Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, $500,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heartland BizTown and Finance Park for Polk County Public Schools, $2.5 million.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Southeastern University Trades Start Up Program, $750,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RCMA Community Academy campus in Mulberry, $500,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North Lake Shipp corridor improvements in Winter Haven, $560,000.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report also cited $387.1 million in local transportation projects among groups of allocations that merit special consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The budget includes such local items as $2.5 million for construction of the North Ridge Trail in the Four Corners area and $600,000 for an extension and improvements to Robinson Road in Haines City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Florida Legislature approved the budget at the close of its annual session in early March. Gov. Ron DeSantis has not yet signed the budget.
