The idea for lawn signs came from Lake Morton resident Kimberly McCole, according to Townsend, to serve as a visual display of the community\u2019s united opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf we feel strongly about this as a neighborhood, then we need to show our feelings,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supporters of Thomas Brawner and his wife, Madison, who hope to turn the property into the future home of Alta Schoolhouse, wore bright blue T-shirts to the\u00a0Oct. 15 public hearing. Townsend said the neighborhood association hopes the lawn signs will bring the issue to a larger audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want the whole community to know what\u2019s happening,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want anyone who drives up and down the streets on their way to downtown, or worships at the churches near Lake Morton, to know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Brawners were denied permission to add two fire escapes to the building\u2019s exterior\u00a0in order to meet state fire code by the city\u2019s Historic Board Preservation last month, but will go back with revised plans. A request for a conditional use permit to run a preschool is tentatively scheduled to go before the city\u2019s Planning and Zoning Board on Nov. 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Townsend said the neighborhood association has not attempted to sit down and talk with the Brawners about the residents\u2019 concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhether or not Lakeland needs another preschool is irrelevant, this is the wrong location for this type of use,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is no common ground for us to discuss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The publicity of the neighborhood association\u2019s actions may also serve a dual purpose.
