Donald Trump\u00a0may be\u00a0convicted\u00a0of a felony and reside in Florida, a state notorious for restricting the voting rights of people with felony convictions. However, he can still vote as long as he stays out of prison in New York State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s because Florida defers to other states\u2019 disenfranchisement rules for residents convicted of out-of-state felonies. In Trump\u2019s case, New York law only removes the right to vote for people convicted of felonies when they\u2019re incarcerated. Once they\u2019re out of prison, their rights are automatically restored, even if they\u2019re on parole, per a 2021 law passed by the state\u2019s Democratic legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf a Floridian\u2019s voting rights are restored in the state of conviction, they are restored under Florida law,\u201d Blair Bowie of the Campaign Legal Center wrote in a post explaining the state of law, noting that people without Trump\u2019s legal resources are often confused by Florida\u2019s complex rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So as long as Trump isn\u2019t sent to prison, he can vote for himself in Florida in November\u2019s election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump was convicted Thursday of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lifelong New Yorker, Trump established residency in Florida in 2019, while he was in the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
