Jamal Hudson was in juvenile court Friday after the Polk State Attorney\u2019s office had issued a \u201cno bill\u201d order Wednesday. On Thursday, Hudson\u2019s family was notified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news was a huge relief for the soft-spoken 16-year-old, who said it was, \u201cGood &#8211; that I can go places now. And not be stuck in the house for no reason for something I didn&#8217;t do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey just called me yesterday and let me know that the state had dropped all the charges against Jahmal,\u201d said his mother, Ja\u2019Tae Lewis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lewis stood outside the court firmly grasping the no-bill order. She too was relieved there would be no charges against her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hudson was involved in a violent confrontation with two Lakeland Police officers on Memorial Day. He was at a pool party with friends when they were told they were trespassing. Jamal went to retrieve some of his personal items and said that&#8217;s when the incident occurred.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was upsetting, he said, \u201cbecause I didn&#8217;t do anything to get hit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video shows two Lakeland police officers punching Jahmal, pulling his hair, and then tasing him before knocking him to the ground &#8211; even as his friends are shouting to police that he&#8217;s a juvenile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident led to a weekend protest in front of the Lakeland Police Department. The local NAACP branch has appealed to the city council to order the release of any police body cam video that may exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would never have thought in a million years that this would happen to my son. Any of my children,\u201d Lewis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jahmal and his mother say they feel vindicated by the state attorney&#8217;s office decision, but as far as they&#8217;re concerned, it doesn&#8217;t end here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe haven&#8217;t seen justice yet,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cHolding both of those police officers accountable. And hopefully, the other police officers that were giving me a hard time as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hudson has been under house arrest since his last court hearing a little over a week ago. The first thing he did when he knew he was allowed to venture out again was to &#8220;go to my grandma,&#8221; he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Community leaders also say that while charges against Hudson have been dropped, they intend to continue protesting. The incident is what they consider part of an ongoing pattern of behavior at the police department \u2013 where several reports of police brutality have been leveled over the past two years.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"615\" height=\"329\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-56-7.png?resize=615%2C329&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-56-7.png?w=615&amp;ssl=1 615w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-56-7.png?resize=300%2C160&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLakeland has a problem,&#8221; said Pastor Clayton Cowart with the Poor Minority Justice Association. \u201cIf you can see it, and I can see it and others can see it, I wonder why the Lakeland Police Department just can&#8217;t get a grip that there&#8217;s a problem here. There&#8217;s a serious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Life Malcolm is an Attorney that represented Jahmal Hudson, Jr said, &#8220;When I represented Jahmal Hudson, in the nascent stages, of this case, we called for the State of Florida to drop all charges, against Jahmal.&nbsp;While I no longer represent Jahmal and his family, I am delighted to know that the State of Florida dropped, the charges against him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lakeland Police Department said Chief Sam Taylor ordered an administrative review of the incident by the department\u2019s Office of Professional Standards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charges have officially been dropped against a Lakeland teenager who got into a Memorial Day fight with two Lakeland Police officers.
