{"id":47146,"date":"2024-06-29T16:20:13","date_gmt":"2024-06-29T20:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=47146"},"modified":"2024-06-29T16:20:50","modified_gmt":"2024-06-29T20:20:50","slug":"the-city-commission-will-vote-monday-on-a-contract-to-remove-5600-cubic-yards-of-contaminated-soil-near-carillon-lakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2024\/06\/29\/the-city-commission-will-vote-monday-on-a-contract-to-remove-5600-cubic-yards-of-contaminated-soil-near-carillon-lakes\/","title":{"rendered":"The City Commission will vote Monday on a contract to remove 5,600 cubic yards of contaminated soil near Carillon Lakes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will cost the City of Lakeland nearly a million dollars to clean up a wetland near the Carillon Lakes neighborhood where more than 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"156\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-50-45.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47147\" style=\"width:774px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-50-45.png 425w, https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-50-45-300x110.png 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spill was discovered on April 22, but according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakelandgov.net\/portals\/CityClerk\/City%20Commission\/Agendas\/2024\/07-01-24\/07-01-24%20V-B%20TA%20with%20ACT%20for%20Contaminated%20Soils%20at%20Gateway%20Blvd%20and%20Whitten%20Rd%20and%20Appropriation%20for%20Wastewater%20RR%20Fund.pdf\">staff summary<\/a>, the leak from a broken 12-inch force main \u201chad been occurring for a significant amount of time and was likely the source of odor complaints from nearby residents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crews contained the spill and rerouted the wastewater through a 4,000-foot bypass line within two days. \u201cHowever, that particular force main does convey a large portion of industrial waste,\u201d City Manager Shawn Sherrouse told Lakeland Commissioners on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the size of the spill and soil sampling results, Sherrouse said the Florida Department of Environment Protection requires extensive clean-up and remediation of the site in southwest Lakeland.&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bottom of Form<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sherrouse said it\u2019s important for the work to begin as soon as possible \u2014 before the heavy rainy season begins and floods the site, which is a wooded wetland.
