{"id":47543,"date":"2024-07-10T23:18:19","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T03:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=47543"},"modified":"2024-07-10T23:18:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T03:18:26","slug":"mulberry-city-manager-installs-free-ac-units-for-migrant-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2024\/07\/10\/mulberry-city-manager-installs-free-ac-units-for-migrant-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Mulberry city manager installs free AC units for migrant families"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mulberry city officials are volunteering their time to improve the living conditions of migrant farmworkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As city manager for the City of Mulberry, Rick Johnson typically spends his day planning, organizing, and managing the activities of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"496\" height=\"271\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-57A-2.png?resize=496%2C271&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-57A-2.png?w=496&amp;ssl=1 496w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-57A-2.png?resize=300%2C164&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI always tell everybody, I&#8217;m not the city hall manager, I&#8217;m the city manager so there\u2019s a lot of facets,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s not typical is how Johnson spends his time while off the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe take a ride out there on our own usually during the equivalent of our lunch hour, and we go out there and we have to rebuild the frame for the window, and we install these window air conditioners out there,\u201d said Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson is out in this migrant community replacing and installing air conditioners for families at no cost. Mulberry is home to a large population of migrant farmworkers and most live in older trailers without working HVAC systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe just decided whatever we could do for practical means to make their living conditions a little bit more tolerable,\u201d said Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Home Depot gave the city grants to buy the AC units. Rosa Castillo cares for children while their parents are in the fields. Cristina Crispin grew up in a farmworking household and knows firsthand what this means for families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMajority of them come from low-income homes so this is big for them,\u201d said Cristina Crispin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a labor of love for city officials who pitch in, to install the AC units several times a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a little team and we cut, measure everything, cut everything, screw the things into the walls, test everything and make sure everything is working.
