One of the preeminent historians of Florida,\nBrown brings this important but understudied figure in American history to the\nforeground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henry Bradley Plant: Gilded Age Dreams for Florida and a New\nSouth&nbsp;carefully examines the complicated years of adventure and activity\nthat marked Plant\u2019s existence, from his birth in Connecticut in 1819 to his\nsomewhat mysterious death in New York City in 1899. Brown illuminates Plant\u2019s\nvision and perspectives for the state of Florida and the country as a whole and\ntraces many of his influences back to events from his childhood and early\nadulthood. The book also elaborates on Plant\u2019s controversial Civil War relationships\nand his utilization of wartime earnings in the postwar era to invest in the\nbankrupt Southern rail lines. With the success of his businesses such as the\nSouthern Express Company and the Tampa Bay Hotel, Plant transformed Florida\ninto a hub for trade and tourism\u2014traits we still recognize in the Florida of\ntoday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canter Brown Jr.&nbsp;has taught in the history at Florida\nA&amp;M University and Fort Valley State University. He is author or coauthor\nof many books, including&nbsp;Florida\u2019s Peace River Frontier, Florida\u2019s Black\nPublic Officials, 1867\u20131924;&nbsp;with Walter W.
