Twenty-one months after a 21-year-old deputy\u2019s death, a bronze statue of him now stands outside the Polk County Sheriff\u2019s Office, the place where he grew up wanting to work.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a remarkable piece of work and art,\u201d said Sheriff Grady Judd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Sheriff Judd, the bronze statue captures a young man\u2019s personality: his infectious smile, his precise haircut and even the unique way he stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook at the actual type of watch that he wore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statue of Deputy Blane Lane now stands alongside other Polk County deputies and officials who were killed in the line of duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cWe have this memorial set so no one can come into our building to do business without seeing those that paid the ultimate sacrifice,\u201d said Judd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Lane, at just age 21, was fatally shot while making a felony arrest in October 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, Sheriff Judd, surrounded by Lane\u2019s family, unveiled his bronze statue<\/a> and inscription outside the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe pledge to always remember his sacrifice,\u201d said Polk County Sheriff\u2019s Office Chief of Staff Steve Lester during the unveiling ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n

Lane\u2019s mother, Shellie Lane attended the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA day doesn\u2019t go by without me missing or thinking about him. I would give anything to bring him back,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheriff Judd remembers Lane as a class act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Lane wanted to someday follow in Judd\u2019s footsteps and become sheriff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would love to have helped him get to his dream but he died protecting us and keeping us safe,\u201d said Sheriff Judd. \u201cPolk County suffered a great loss when Deputy Lane died in the line of duty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lane, a young father and enthusiastic deputy, will stand tall and be remembered for years to come, outside the office he dreamed of one day leading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheriff Judd said he has plans for more memorials that will honor every deputy killed in the line of duty in Polk County, a process that could take several years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
