Trinity Apartments<\/a> where low-income seniors like Manuel Velazquez appreciate all the ingredients that beef up his meals and budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cAbsolutely, that\u2019s the main goal. It really helps all the way around,\u201d said Velazquez as he went through his brown bag of groceries. \u201cPrices at the store, with the recession, every week they\u2019re going up more and more \u2014 so this is a great help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sharon Haselton, who\u2019s rockin\u2019 purple Crocs at 78, says she and the other residents on fixed incomes count on the deliveries and are thankful for the charity\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, they\u2019re terrific!\u201d Haselton said \u201cA lot of the people here would not do as well without her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that brings us to \u201cher,\u201d Mildred McMillon. She started the North Lakeland chapter of Faith In Action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd the Spirit just say, \u2018This is it. This is what you need to do,\u2019 and I said I would work a half-day and get it going,\u201d McMillon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was 21 years ago, and it hasn\u2019t exactly worked out how she planned: \u201cI haven\u2019t worked a half-day yet,\u201d McMillon said with a chuckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You\u2019ll find McMillon taking calls, driving to get fresh produce, and doing whatever it takes to help her neighbors. And by the way, this dynamo is older than most of the people she serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI will be 95 in January,\u201d she reveals a bit hesitantly. \u201cI was taking one pill from the doctor, but now I take two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If only the doctor could order up a better building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are in desperate need of more space,\u201d McMillon said, pointing to rooms in the house overflowing with donations of supplies like sheets and blankets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
McMillon dreams of creating a larger senior center where elders could gather and talk, and learn how to use computers. She\u2019ll need the community\u2019s help and donations to get that done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it certainly seems like McMillon already has someone pretty important on her side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
