After starting the season with three-straight wins Florida Southern College men’s basketball has cracked the top 25 of the first NABC Coaches Poll of the regular season, coming in at No. 18 when the National Association of Basketball Coaches released the poll on Tuesday. It is the highest ranking for the Moccasins since being ranked No. 7 in week five of the 2019-20 campaign and Florida Southern is one of two teams from the Sunshine State Conference to make the top 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mocs have now been ranked in the NABC Coaches Poll 214 times in program history, including 13 times under head coach Mike Donnelly<\/a>. Southern has dominated its competition in the early going, picking up wins over Delta State (92-74), West Alabama (76-59), and USC Aiken (96-80). The Moccasins join fellow SSC member Nova Southeastern (No. 2) as the two conference institutions ranked in the top 25, while Barry is one of 25 other teams receiving votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the those in the poll and those receiving votes include future Moccasin opponents Valdosta State (No. 9) and New Haven (RV), who will take on the Mocs at Jenkins Field House over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Florida Southern opens SSC action this week, with games at Embry-Riddle (Nov. 20) and Barry (Nov. 23)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northwest Missouri State remains atop the NABC\/Division II poll and will take a winning streak that has reached 43 games into a game Thursday against William Jewell.  The Bearcats, who were also ranked first in the final six polls of the 2018-19 season, have led the poll 23 times since the Dec. 13, 2016 ranking.

The top three spots went unchanged this week, while UC San Diego moved up one position to fourth following West Liberty’s loss Saturday at then-No. 22 Daemen.  West Texas A&M beat then-No. 6 Lincoln Memorial in overtime on the opening night of the season and moved up to fifth and Queens (N.C.) advanced to the sixth spot as a result.

St. Edward’s, off to a 5-0 start, made the biggest jump among the teams that were ranked in the preseason poll as the Hilltoppers moved up eight spots to 12th<\/sup>.  Saint Anselm made a seven-spot rise from 21st<\/sup> to 14th<\/sup>.

A total of six teams that were unranked in the preseason poll have made their way into this week’s top 25.  The highest-ranked of that group is Florida Southern, who entered the poll at No. 18, followed by Ferris State at No. 19 and St. Thomas Aquinas at No. 20.

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and South Atlantic Conference again have two teams apiece in the top 10 (Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Southern from the MIAA; Lincoln Memorial and Queens, N.C., from the SAC). The Great Lakes Valley Conference has three top 25 teams in Bellarmine, Southern Indiana and Indianapolis, while seven other conferences have two teams apiece.

A total of 16 of the 23 NCAA Division II conferences have representatives in this week’s top 25.

This week’s national schedule includes matchups between No. 24 Point Loma and No. 4 UC San Diego on Tuesday and No. 20 St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 23 Jefferson on Saturday.  Many conferences will begin their league slates in the upcoming seven days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
