Even though two Lakeland city boards have rejected their preschool\nplans, Thomas and Madison Brawner say they are pressing on with their proposal\nto turn the 107-year-old Dean House into a preschool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, The Lakeland Planning & Zoning Board this morning\nunanimously denied the Brawner\u2019s\u2019 application for a conditional use allowing a\nschool serving up to 70 children ages 2 to 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city planning staff\u2019s main concern with the Brawner\u2019s\napplication was their plan to use a 10-foot residential alley as the route for\nparents to drop off and pick up their children. The planners also expressed\nsome uncertainties about plans for five on-street parking spaces on Frank Lloyd\nWright Way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brawner\u2019s faced another setback Oct. 24, when the Lakeland\nHistoric Preservation Board\u2019s Design Review Committee rejected their proposal\nto place two fire escapes on the western side of the building. That board also\nrejected a plan to place 10 paved parking places on a currently grass area\nalong the alley near Frank Lloyd Wright Way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their plan for fire escapes is less intrusive to the house\u2019s\nhistoric nature than the interior alterations that would be needed to meet fire\nregulations, he said, and noted there were fire escapes when the house was used\nas housing for Florida Southern College students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brawner\u2019s told the reporters today: There will be an Alta\nSchoolhouse somewhere in Lakeland. \u201cAlta Schoolhouse is bigger than one\nbuilding,\u201d Madison Brawner said. \u201cWe\u2019re coming to Lakeland no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
