{"id":49523,"date":"2024-09-08T18:57:23","date_gmt":"2024-09-08T22:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=49523"},"modified":"2024-09-08T18:57:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-08T22:57:28","slug":"several-cases-of-sloth-fever-confirmed-in-florida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2024\/09\/08\/several-cases-of-sloth-fever-confirmed-in-florida\/","title":{"rendered":"Several cases of &#8216;sloth fever&#8217; confirmed in Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Florida Department of Health confirms multiple travel-associated cases of sloth fever in the Bay Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/mosquito-borne-diseases\/_documents\/2024-35-arbovirus-surveillance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the Aug. 25-31 report<\/a>, there have been 32 cases of travel-related oropouche virus \u2013 also known as sloth fever \u2013 in the state, including the following Bay Area cases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/hillsborough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hillsborough<\/a>\u00a0= 5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/polk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Polk<\/a>\u00a0= 2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/pasco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pasco<\/a>\u00a0= 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/sarasota-county\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarasota<\/a>\u00a0= 1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/sloth-fever-oropouche-virus-entered-us-what-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oropouche virus<\/a>&nbsp;is something that is relatively new for the mosquito control world,&#8221; Pasco County Mosquito Control District Executive Director Adriane Rogers said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"bb7c67\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bb7c67;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"488\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-61-9.png?resize=882%2C488&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49524 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-61-9.png?w=882&amp;ssl=1 882w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-61-9.png?resize=300%2C166&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-61-9.png?resize=768%2C425&amp;ssl=1 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sloth fever has traditionally spread among sloths and other animals in forested areas&nbsp;in South America. But last month,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/2024\/han00515.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the CDC issued an advisory<\/a>, warning people about sloth fever after an increase in cases across the U.S. and Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of Florida\u2019s reported cases are related to travel to Cuba, according to the state health department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;So people are going to those areas, getting infected with oropouche, and then they&#8217;re coming back here,&#8221; Rogers said. &#8220;So we&#8217;re concerned that our local mosquitoes might have a role in further transmission.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between Debby and all the rain the Bay Area has seen lately, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What we&#8217;re doing is trying to keep that mosquito population low, so that our mosquitoes can&#8217;t transmit the diseases that these people are coming (down) with from travel,&#8221; Rogers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No deaths related to sloth fever have been reported in the U.S. Symptoms are similar to dengue fever and include fever, headache, and chills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Florida Department of Health confirms multiple travel-associated cases of sloth fever in the Bay Area.
