Sheriff Grady Judd is briefing the media about a death investigation off of Ewell Road in Lakeland. There is no suspect at large, and the public is not in danger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man was shot and killed early Thursday afternoon while\nattempting to pick up his toddler son at the home of his ex-wife, Polk County\nsheriff\u2019s officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The names of the man killed and the man who shot him are\nbeing withheld per Marsy\u2019s Law, the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Details of the shooting are still under investigation,\naccording to Polk Sheriff Grady Judd, who addressed the media Thursday\nafternoon at Victory Church, close to where the incident occurred in the area\nof Ewell Road and Lunn Road in southwest Lakeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone is cooperating in the investigation and we will be\nable to sort this out,\u201d Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judd said the shooting was a case of a domestic violence\nevent \u201cthat went terribly wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It began with the biological father of the child, who is\nnearly 2 years of age, visiting the home of his ex-wife to get his son. The\nchild\u2019s mother was not at home at the time, but her boyfriend was watching her\nson, Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the timeline of events is unclear at this early\nstage of the investigation, the victim dialed 9-1-1 to report a problem with\nthe custody exchange, Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after the call for assistance, the shooter called\n911, he said, adding that the man is cooperating with investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know if the father was the aggressor, or why the\nshooter shot (him),\u201d Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mother of the man who was killed also was on hand for\nthe child exchange and witnessed the shooting, Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
