Now, according to The Post\u2019s analysis, a third of U.S. grocery stores are owned by just four companies \u2014 Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, and Aldi (S\u00fcd), the fastest-growing supermarket chain in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis, which is based on OpenStreetMap location data, looks at grocery store ownership both regionally and by county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consumers may not always know they\u2019re shopping at a large chain, though. Both Kroger and Albertsons, the second-and third-largest grocery store chains, each operate under about two dozen banners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a look at which brands are prominent in some counties around the Tampa Bay area:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hillsborough County<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publix: 29 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winn-Dixie\/Aldi: 22 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walmart: 17 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprouts Farmers Market: 5 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Manatee County<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publix: 38 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winn-Dixie\/Aldi: 20 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walmart: 16 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pasco County<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publix: 38 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winn-Dixie\/Aldi: 28 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walmart: 17 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save-A-Lot: 5 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pinellas County<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publix: 32 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winn-Dixie\/Aldi: 18 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walmart: 15 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save-A-Lot: 4 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Polk County<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publix: 39 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winn-Dixie\/Aldi\/Harveys: 25 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walmart: 16 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save-A-Lot: 7 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sarasota County<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publix: 41 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winn-Dixie\/Aldi: 15 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walmart: 14 percent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Target: 6 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Major Grocers Around The Nation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walmart is especially strong in the middle of the country, Albertsons dominates in the Northwest, and Kroger has a strong presence in the mountain states and Ohio Valley, according to the analysis. Smaller companies have strong regional presences, including Publix in Florida, H-E-B in Texas, and the Dutch company Ahold Delhaize (Food Lion, Giant Food and Shop &amp; Stop) throughout the East Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walmart has the largest number of stores \u2014 about 90 percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart \u2014 and is the leader in market share, followed by Kroger, Costco, Albertsons and Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The supermarket industry could further tighten if a proposed $24.6 billion merger between Kroger and Albertsons is allowed to go through. A federal judge in Oregon is currently deciding if the merger will help or harm consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Federal Trade Commission and nine attorneys general who sued to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/legal-library\/browse\/cases-proceedings\/kroger-companyalbertsons-companies-inc-matter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">block the merger<\/a>&nbsp;say it could limit the competition between the two and result in higher food prices at a time when customers are still struggling to pay higher prices linked to higher manufacturing costs, lingering pandemic supply chain issues and bird flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The supermarkets say they would be better able to create the efficiencies of scale that result in lower prices, and more effectively compete with retailers like Walmart, Target, Amazon and others that have gotten into the grocery business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear when U.S. District Court Judge Adrienne Nelson will issue her decision. Also this week, testimony continued in an antitrust lawsuit filed in Washington State.
