If there was any question about Mayor Bill Mutz\u2019s position on\nthe Broadband debate it was surely made aware of today at the roundtable\nmeeting at Catapult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of Spectrum\u2019s nationwide rollout of fiber internet\nservices with nearly a gigabit of download speeds last year, Mutz said there is\nno need now for Lakeland to take on the \u201cenormous financial and technological\nrisks\u201d to fill a market void with the creation of its own retail service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mayor’s statement came during an event hosted by Catapult, the Lakeland Economic Development Council\u2019s business incubator, in collaboration with Spectrum, an LEDC member.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spectrum has announced it was spending $75,000 to equip\nCatapult\u2019s new building north of Lake Mirror with gigabit-speed wired and\nwireless connectivity. Catapult 2.0 is expected to open in January. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his comments, Mutz said he was grateful for Spectrum\u2019s commitment to improving its network, and that as a result, \u201cwe (currently) have the capacity to be a gigabit city.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spectrum\u2019s gigabit service costs $109.99 per month with a\n$199.99 activation fee, based on a review of multiple Lakeland addresses\nthrough the Spectrum website, though prices could vary by location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spectrum\u2019s regional vice president, Marva Johnson, said her\ncompany recognizes \u201chigh-speed broadband creates many opportunities.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mutz\u2019s statements in support of Spectrum, which would likely\nsee a reduction in its market share in Lakeland if the city were to build its\nown internet utility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mayor told The Lakeland Gazette a month ago he was not\nin favor of the venture at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
