A Lakeland man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison\nafter pleading no contest to beating a man to death on the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a plea agreement with prosecutors, Shaquille Jadon\nMothersill, 26, who initially had been charged with second-degree murder,\npleaded no contest Friday to manslaughter, which carries a maximum 15-year\nsentence. Second-degree murder is punishable by 30 years to life imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to recommend a\n10-year prison term. State sentencing guidelines called for him to receive 10\nyears in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By pleading no contest, Mothersill neither admitted to nor\nchallenged the allegations against him, but legally the plea carries the same\nweight as a guilty plea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he was arrested, Mothersill told Lakeland police\nofficers that he was playing with his dog in the 700 block of East First Street\nwhen Edwin Quinones, 59, of Lakeland, hit him in the back of the head with a\nsilver, metal crutch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told officers that he struck back, hitting Quinones with\nhis fist, according to the police report. When Quinones fell to the ground,\nMothersill told police, he continued to hit and kick Quinones around his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe defendant stated he was so angry he \u2018blacked out\u2019\nduring the incident,\u201d the police report stated. \u201cThe defendant stated he had\njust smoked K-2 (synthetic marijuana) prior to the incident.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mothersill told officers he knew Quinones and had never had\nissues with him in the past, according to his arrest affidavit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quinones was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical\nCenter after the Oct. 29 incident, and he later died of his injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mothersill was arrested Oct. 30 after an anonymous caller\ntold Lakeland police that he could be found in a breezeway at 730 E. First St.\nIn the police report, officers stated Mothersill was using a silver crutch to\nwalk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mothersill has been held in the Polk County Jail since his\narrest, and in sentencing him, Circuit Judge Larry Helms gave him credit for\nthe time he\u2019s already served.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
