Much of what the agency does is give out money in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FEMA_logo.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26408\" style=\"width:474px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can include assistance to individuals affected by disasters, such as payments of $750 to pay for their immediate needs \u2014 like medicine or diapers \u2014 after a storm or earthquake hits. It can also mean additional money to rent an apartment because their home is destroyed or to pay for a storage unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That $750, however, has been mischaracterized by several high-profile politicians, including former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He, and others, have claimed that the $750 payment is a loan and that is the only form of assistance FEMA is providing. The initial $750 is the first payment FEMA will make to storm survivors. They are also who eligible for other forms of assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond that, those affected by the hurricanes also can apply for several other types of assistance, including money for rent while they\u2019re displaced or money to store their belongings while they repair their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can I receive FEMA aid?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cSerious Needs Assistance\u201d is an upfront, flexible payment to help cover essential items like food, water, baby formula, breastfeeding supplies, medication, and other emergency supplies,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/disaster-assistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the agency\u00a0<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are four ways you can apply for FEMA disaster assistance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fill out a DisasterAssistance.gov application online<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply using the FEMA app. Download the free app from your smartphone\u2019s app store<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply by phone at 1-800-621-3362<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply in person at a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/egateway.fema.gov\/ESF6\/DRCLocator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find a DRC near you<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who is eligible for FEMA aid?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the agency, you must live in a presidentially declared disaster area to receive financial assistance from FEMA.
