 After helping lead Florida Southern College women’s basketball to a pair of wins to open Sunshine State Conference action, sophomore Bekki Kalaydjiev<\/a> has been named as the SSC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalaydjiev averaged 4.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 steals per game in wins over Embry-Riddle (65-49) and Barry (59-54). The win at ERAU snapped a three-game road losing streak to the Eagles, while the win over Barry marked the fourth time this season that the Mocs have held an opponent to less than 60 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Wednesday’s triumph at Embry-Riddle, Kalaydjiev had four points, five rebounds, one block, and a career-high six steals. She followed that up with five points, five rebounds, and two steals against Barry. Kalaydjiev is the second-straight Defensive Player of the Week winner for the Moccasins, joining teammate Julia Jenike<\/a> who won the award last week. Kalaydjiev currently ranks first in the SSC in steals per game (2.3) and is 10th in total defensive rebounds (24).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalaydjiev’s Defensive Player of the Week honor makes her the sixth student-athlete in program history to earn the award since the conference began Defensive Player of the Week honors during the 2015-16 campaign. Former Moccasins Jensen Blassage and Gianna Vastola also won SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors once in their careers, while Mariah Harris was a two-time winner and Anja Fuchs-Robetin won a program-record six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
