Buddy MacKay passed away at the age of 91.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"6c504b\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #6c504b;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Former-Florida-Gov.-Buddy-MacKay.webp?resize=194%2C259&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53074 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MacKay served in the military, the Florida House and the Florida Senate before he served as lieutenant governor under then-governor and Democrat Lawton Chiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chiles then had a heart attack and died in December of that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MacKay ran for governor himself in November 1998, but lost to Republican Jeb Bush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MacKay took over as governor for a couple of weeks until Bush was inaugurated in January.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Florida Gov.
