The Polk County Sheriff\u2019s Office responded to a residence in\nthe Watersong Resort development near Davenport where the homeowner reported\nthat a package from Amazon was stolen from his front porch. The package was\ndelivered on December 19, 2019 according to his Amazon account information, but\nthere was no package when he got home. The homeowner pulled up his surveillance\nvideo covering the front door and saw the Amazon delivery driver deliver the\npackage, take a delivery confirmation photo, and then remove the package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because this porch pirate was an employee of Amazon,\ndetectives believed, this would be easy to solve\u2014good for the Sheriff\u2019s Office,\nthe homeowner, and Amazon\u2014getting a dishonest employee off the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not so fast. When detectives contacted Amazon in person at\ntheir logistics center, Amazon employees would not cooperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou need a subpoena,\u201d multiple Amazon managers told Polk\nCounty Sheriff\u2019s Office detectives. Even Amazon\u2019s loss prevention manager told\na detective to get a subpoena\u2014that Amazon would not cooperate with law\nenforcement and identify their driver unless the Sheriff\u2019s Office served a\nsubpoena for their records at their corporate headquarters in Delaware. This is\ndespite detectives having video, pictures, and the date, time, and the address\nof the delivery and crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The homeowner and the community\u2019s security team were the\nonly reason why detectives were able to identify and arrest 27-year-old Jose\nCampos of 3240 Ibis Ct., Kissimmee. The homeowner provided the video which\nrecorded the theft and security at Watersong Resort provided the tag of the\nAmazon driver\u2019s vehicle. Detectives ran the tag and it came back to Campos\u2019\ngirlfriend in Kissimmee. Detectives contacted her and she told them her\nboyfriend uses the car to deliver packages for Amazon. We then interviewed Jose\nCampos. He confirmed he was delivering for Amazon at the time. He also said\nthat yes, it was him in the video. Campos was arrested and charged with\nburglary and theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not surprised by much anymore, but this lack of cooperation\nfrom Amazon floors me. All we needed was a name\u2014they knew who committed this\ncrime in Polk County, and they would not tell us without us serving legal\nprocess to their corporate headquarters in Delaware. This is just irresponsible\non their part. They apparently don\u2019t care about the ongoing safe and secure\ndelivery of their packages to their customers and exposing other customers to\nburglary and theft.
