A new report found that a minimum-wage employee would have to work 106 hours a week to afford a median-priced apartment in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n

The findings from Redfin <\/a>, a technology-powered real estate company, show that workers making a wage of $11.59 an hour would be able to afford an average apartment, costing $1,559, by putting in more than 100 hours of labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redfin defined an apartment as \u201caffordable\u201d if the renter is putting 30% of their income towards housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Florida, the report lists the effective minimum wage at $12\/hr, according to 2024 data. Floridians working at this hourly rate would have to work 115 hours per week to afford the median-priced apartment in the state, listed at $1,796.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obviously not realistic for most people to clock into their job for over 100 hours a week, but this thought experiment shines a light on the massive rental affordability gap between the average American and our country\u2019s lowest earners,\u201d Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather said. \u201cIt\u2019s virtually impossible for a minimum-wage worker to afford the typical apartment on their own, which is why many have to find ways to reduce their housing expenses, like living with roommates or family members, applying for a spot in public housing, or using Housing Choice Vouchers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the report details that the federal minimum wage hasn\u2019t gone up from $7.25 since 2009, the wage has increased in 30 states. Therefore, Redfin has used the national effective minimum wage of $11.59 for this study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To determine the median-priced apartment, the report looked at the asking rents of the three months ending on Jan. 31, using 2024 annual wage data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, the average price of rent peaked in August 2022, at a whopping $1,704. With this price in mind, minimum wage workers would have had to work 125 hours a week to afford the typical apartment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
