According to a press release, detectives with the Tampa Police Department (TPD)<\/a> have charged a 47-year-old Tampa Prep Teacher with 51 felonies after she stole more than $70,000 from a local bakery where she worked on the weekends.

The Alessi’s Bakery owner told<\/a> law enforcement that they hired Rosa Harwell at the bakery on November 15, 2016; years later, a pattern of negative transactions prompted the bakery to conduct an extensive internal audit, which uncovered more than 500 fraudulent transactions labeled as refunds in the Point-of-Sale system between March of 2020 and February 2025. These “extremely excessive” refunds only appeared during Harwell’s weekend shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TPD<\/a> detectives spoke with Harwell on February 16, 2025, who stated she had served as a tutor for the owner’s son in 2019 and was told she would be reimbursed for lowering her tutoring costs by receiving an increase in pay at the bakery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harwell went on to claim that her direct deposits never reflected the raise, so she began to pay herself from the register. She also admitted to detectives that self-payments began about four or five years ago. According to investigators, Harwell stole a total of $74,520.97 from Alessi’s. Weekend work at Alessi’s was Harwell’s second job; she worked during the week at Tampa Preparatory School<\/a> as a mathematics teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a report from Fox News, Tampa Prep provided the following statement regarding Harwell’s arrest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are very disappointed to learn this morning that a Tampa Preparatory School mathematics teacher was arrested yesterday and is facing significant criminal allegations of financial fraud. These allegations have arising outside employment with Tampa Prep and we have made the decision to terminate this teacher’s employment.
