The recalled window air conditioners were sold at Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy and other stores nationwide between March 2020 and May 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly two million air conditioners were recalled <\/a>Thursday due to possible mold growth and exposure within the units. <\/p>\n\n\n

U and U+ Window Air Conditioners, made by Midea and sold under several brand names including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze, are impacted. See a full list of impacted units below.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says mold can grow in the units when water pools inside the air conditioner and fails to drain quickly enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mold exposure poses risks of respiratory issues or other infections to some consumers,” the recall warns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1.7 million recalled units were sold at Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy, and other stores nationwide between March 2020 and May 2025. They were also sold online at these stores and others like Walmart.com, Amazon.com, and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The window units were sold for between $280 to $500 and came in three sizes of cooling power: 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are at least 152 reports of mold inside these air conditioning units, including 17 reports of customers experiencing symptoms like respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing and\/or sore throats from mold exposure, according to the recall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone with one of these units is encouraged to contact Midea for a free repair or a “full or prorated refund,” based on the purchase or manufacture dates. Those opting to get the refund will have to mail the unit back to Midea after cutting the power cord while it’s unplugged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Otherwise, customers can schedule repairs to install a new drain plug and\/or be sent a repair kit with the necessary tools to take care of it themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall in conjunction with Canada since nearly 50,000 units were also sold there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Midea suggests customers go to www.MideaUrecall.expertinquiry.com<\/a> to see if their unit is impacted by the recall and what steps to take next. Customers can see their unit’s model number on a label on the front right side of the unit when facing the air conditioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
