Sheriffs are furious that the Department of Homeland Security is using their own data against them in a desperate bid to meet the Trump administration\u2019s absurd quotas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Immigration and Customs Enforcement looks to bolster its ranks by 10,000\u2014courtesy of the slush fund it is provided under Trump\u2019s budget\u2014it\u2019s resorted to poaching local law enforcement officers who participated in ICE\u2019s 287(g) program, which allows local law enforcement to partner with the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent days, ICE\u2019s deputy director has reportedly sent out emails urging 287(g) participants to join the agency. \u201cAs someone who is currently supporting ICE through the 287(g) program, you understand the unique responsibility we carry in protecting our communities and upholding federal law,\u201d the email says, per NBC News. The offer also carries potential incentives, including a $50,000 signing bonus and up to $60,000 in student loan repayment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonathan Thompson, executive director and CEO of the National Sheriffs\u2019 Association, told NBC the move was \u201cinappropriate behavior of a partner organization,\u201d adding, \u201cWe\u2019re all on the same boat. And you just don\u2019t treat friends or partners like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County, Florida, told MSNBC, \u201cWe\u2019re a force multiplier to help ICE, and we\u2019ve been spending a lot of time and effort. And the next thing we know, the people who we have submitted to ICE, who have been ICE-trained\u2014on our dime, by the way\u2014received a direct email from the administration.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judd reached for an idiom to convey the betrayal: \u201cI mean, that\u2019s biting the hand that\u2019s feeding you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Florida sheriffs also got figurative: \u201cQuite frankly, it\u2019s like letting the fox in the henhouse,\u201d Brevard County\u2019s sheriff told<\/a> WFTV Channel 9. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to burn bridges, but somebody lit the fire on the other end,\u201d observed the sheriff of Bradford County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many sheriffs are now demanding mea culpas from ICE. (Judd, for instance, told NBC that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem should \u201cget on her big girl pants and do what\u2019s right. She needs to make sure that there\u2019s an apology.\u201d) Some are apparently receiving them: The sheriff\u2019s office in Forsyth County, Georgia, reportedly received an apology from ICE\u2019s Atlanta Field Office.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
