presentation by the school district<\/a>, Tenoroc High School, for example, is 62% full without portables, but Haines City High School is at 127% utilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou have to be able to alleviate those outskirts of those zones into Tenoroc or into Lake Region to make sure that we\u2019re fully utilizing those buildings and then give relief to those other schools,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yocum said overcrowded areas are on the eastern and western sides, near Orlando and Tampa, while some schools toward the middle are underutilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey\u2019re short-staffed. I did see that in middle school, my daughter had it sometimes, a bunch of substitutes. They didn\u2019t have enough teachers,\u201d said Ruth Santiago, a Lakeland mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school board will be voting on the proposed boundary changes next week, with community forums and public hearings to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe more engaged our community can be in this, the better we can find a balance of what parents want, what our community needs and really what our district needs as a whole,\u201d Yocum said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A final vote may be held by October with the new boundaries implemented the following school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
