Miranda was in the passenger seat of the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ICE agent walked to the passenger side of the car and informed Miranda that they were going to take him into custody. It was at that point that a fight began, Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m told that the fight lasted about five minutes,\u201d the sheriff said, later emphasizing that five minutes is a \u201cvery long tussle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said Miranda was on top of the ICE agent when the second agent sprayed Miranda with pepper spray. Miranda then ran into the woods, according to Judd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ICE agents chased after Miranda but said they lost him in the woods. The Polk County Sheriff\u2019s Office was then called to assist, launching a helicopter, drones, and sending out K-9 teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were just overwhelmed. The issue is ICE needs help,\u201d Judd said, explaining that the agents were also monitoring the two other people in the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ICE agent who got into a fight with Miranda was taken to the hospital to be treated for a shoulder injury, but is expected to be OK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo my knowledge, this is the first time we\u2019ve had an ICE agent injured in the line of duty, and he was significantly injured; he had to go to the hospital,\u201d Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An employee at a nearby business eventually encountered Miranda hiding among several steel drums, according to officials. Judd said Miranda asked the employee for water, but the employee felt something was off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employee went inside and called 911, alerting law enforcement officers to Miranda\u2019s location. Authorities said Miranda was arrested soon after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judd held up a photo showing deputies taking Miranda, who was smiling, into custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cWe have him under arrest. He\u2019s smiling,\u201d the sheriff said. \u201cI bet we\u2019ve wiped the smile off his face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"91796f\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #91796f;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"303\" height=\"293\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screenshot-98-9.webp?resize=303%2C293&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57519 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screenshot-98-9.webp?w=303&amp;ssl=1 303w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screenshot-98-9.webp?resize=300%2C290&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the sheriff\u2019s office, Miranda faces a slew of charges, which all have been upgraded to more serious felonies due to Florida\u2019s recently passed immigration legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charges against him include battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting with violence, resisting without violence, false imprisonment, and burglary of an occupied structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judd said the two other people who were in the car with Miranda cooperated with law enforcement and were taken into ICE custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to officials, Miranda, who is from Nicaragua, is believed to have entered the country in 2021. Judd said he was stopped by border patrol but later released with a court date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miranda was arrested in July 2024 in Galveston, Texas, for DUI, but was released and never showed up for court, according to authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis guy just wanted to get away and he was going to do whatever he needed to do to get away,\u201d Judd said, referring to Miranda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd spoke to reporters Tuesday after he said an ICE agent was attacked and injured while trying to take a man into custody.
