Raw milk is from cows, sheep, goats, and other animals. It is not pasteurized, meaning it does not undergo a heat-treating process that would potentially destroy harmful bacteria. That\u2019s why it can contain disease-causing bacteria, like E. coli and Salmonella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It can be carried along with it, and that’s how you can actually get it within the milk itself,” said gastroenterologist Dr. Raymond Phillips. “You can sometimes pass on pathogens or things that can be bad for you. Things like tuberculosis or various viruses.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The FDOH said it can also have health benefits. They said people who have had the milk have reported positive effects for asthma and allergies, and many people drink it safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I was doing cancer kind of research on the enzymes it provides,” said raw milk consumer Ariana Abramson. “Pasteurization kind of kills the bad bacteria, but it also kills the good bacteria, so a lot of people find it a little bit easier to digest.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
