<\/a>Every day that we fight for animals in Tampa Bay, it becomes clearer that we are not just battling cruelty \u2014 we are battling systems that protect themselves rather than the beings they claim to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On one side of the bridge, we have SPCA Tampa Bay, an organization now tied to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 A guilty plea to animal cruelty<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Leadership with a history that includes being fired from the Humane Society in Indianapolis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Years of unanswered questions about finances, oversight, and internal accountability<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 A board that is nearly invisible, unresponsive, or \u201cunder construction\u201d whenever the public demands answers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, with the situation surrounding Waddles, the curtain has been pulled back even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the bridge sits what many now call the \u201cevil twin\u201d \u2014 the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, led by Sherry Silk, whose reputation is suddenly being filled in piece by piece as the Ramona case brings more and more people forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most shocking part?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of people \u2014 from every corner of Florida and far beyond \u2014 who have messaged me saying, \u201cWe have the same problems at our animal control. The same secrecy. The same fear. The same patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not isolated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s systemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These pigs \u2014 Waddles and Ramona \u2014 have unintentionally exposed a reality that many have whispered about for years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the very organizations entrusted with protecting our animals are failing them, mishandling funds, mishandling power, and shielding leadership instead of shielding lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the more we share their stories, the more people come forward with the same themes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Lack of transparency<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Retaliation against whistleblowers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Financial inconsistencies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Uninvestigated cruelty<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Administrators who stay in power despite proven wrongdoing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It begs a larger, more urgent question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where is the oversight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are the checks and balances for nonprofits and city-funded organizations handling vulnerable living beings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we change a system where leadership can plead guilty to animal cruelty and still keep their titles, salaries, and authority?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, it feels like we are losing the battle \u2014 not because we aren\u2019t fighting hard enough, but because the system was built to protect itself, not the animals inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So maybe the answer isn\u2019t just exposing case after case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the answer is building something bigger:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A call for independent statewide oversight, mandatory transparency practices, mandatory audits, and legally enforceable accountability for organizations that take in public animals and public money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the truth is undeniable now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people rescuing animals from ditches, roadsides, and backyards are held to a higher standard than some of the multimillion-dollar organizations funded to do the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can\u2019t ignore that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can\u2019t unsee it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we can\u2019t keep pretending that \u201ca few mistakes\u201d caused this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is structural failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if the system will not correct itself \u2014 then the community will have to demand the correction for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
