A mandatory burn ban is now in effect for Polk County and the following municipalities: Auburndale, Bartow, Davenport, Dundee, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Haines City, Lake Alfred, Lake Wales, Lakeland and Winter Haven as of Nov. 25. The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n

WHAT IS A BURN BAN?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A burn ban prohibits outdoor burning to prevent accidental and avoidable wildfires. Burn bans occur when there has been an extensive drought, and dry vegetation could easily ignite and start a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The burn ban prohibits the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Campfires;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Bonfires;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Unpermitted controlled burns;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Burning of yard and household trash;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Burning of organic debris;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Igniting of fireworks; and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Noncommercial burning of materials other than for religious or ceremonial purposes, in which case they must be contained in a barbecue grill or barbecue pit, and the total fuel area cannot exceed three feet in diameter and two feet in height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
