She told us they are preparing their oranges, grapefruits and strawberries for a deep freeze, something that can devastate an entire season overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cA prolonged freeze can damage the fruit, it can damage the buds, and it can damage young trees in general, so it can be pretty catastrophic,\u201d Bevilacqua said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polk County is under a freeze watch from late Thursday night into Friday morning, with temperatures possibly dropping as low as 24 degrees. To protect their crops and sensitive vegetation, Bevilacqua said they are using irrigation to coat the trees with water, creating a layer of ice that helps insulate the fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"88905c\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #88905c;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"721\" height=\"283\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-14T193650.808.webp?resize=721%2C283&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61028 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-14T193650.808.webp?w=721&amp;ssl=1 721w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-14T193650.808.webp?resize=300%2C118&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the water hits the tree, it emits heat, keeping the tree at 32 degrees while it is colder than that in the air,\u201d Bevilacqua said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said their grapefruit will be less susceptible to freezing temperatures because they are inside a unique enclosure called Citrus Under Protective Screen (CUPS), designed to keep out the insect that spreads citrus greening.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"83958e\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #83958e;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/download-1-4.webp?resize=259%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61029 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the CUPS structures, it\u2019s about 10 to 15 degrees warmer on average, and then it also really cuts down on the windchill, so there\u2019s not a lot of whatever is going on outside. It\u2019s very minimal in the CUPS structure,\u201d Bevilacqua said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bevilacqua said they will be watching the forecast closely through the night, ready to make adjustments as conditions change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be out all day and all night Thursday and Friday to make sure that we\u2019re running the water when we need to and turn it off when we need to, and it\u2019s really an hour by our situation,\u201d Bevilacqua said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As freezing temperatures move in, citrus growers are working to protect their crops from the cold.
