With each turn of a screw, Publix\u2019s Special mechanic Gene\nAnderson preserves tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He chuckled as he said, “I’d say I work in one of the\ncoolest departments in Publix.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson is the one and only mechanic who fixes and\nrefurbishes Publix’s famous scales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They’re model 3821: people weigher,\u201d Anderson said.\n\u201cThat’s the technical name for it, people weigher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson has repaired more than 800 scales over the past 25\nyears with the majority of scales coming from Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I didn’t know anything about the scales when I\nstarted,” explained Anderson. “The gentleman before me wrote a small\nmanual and then I followed the manual and with some of his critiquing, I\nlearned to do it right here in house.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the scales no longer in production, it’s a\nresponsibility that weighs heavy. “I think the two pieces of machinery\nthat make people the most mad if it isn’t working is this and the ATM\nmachine,” Anderson explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s not just the nostalgia he appreciates in the scales,\nbut the artistry. “It’s a pretty crafty little piece,\u201d Anderson declared.\n\u201cIt’s a lot like a watch. There’s a lot of pivoting points and gears a lot of\nbands that have to be really precise.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After 30 years with Publix and seeing innovation and\ntechnology change the grocery industry, Anderson\u2019s happy one thing stays just\nthe way it is. “It stays with our core value of just being dedicated to\nour customers.
