A bombshell of a Florida House bill (read\nit here<\/a>) was heard Wednesday by the Education Committee would\nconsolidate Florida Polytechnic University into the University of Florida and\nSarasota\u2019s New College into Florida State University. Rep. Randy Fine, a backer.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have an obligation to taxpayers to generate degrees at\nthe lowest possible cost. Unfortunately, degrees earned from Florida Poly and\nNew College cost an order of magnitude more than they do at the other 10 universities,\u201d\nstate Rep. Randy Fine told the Florida Politics website, which first reported\nthe consolidation effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bombshell university consolidation bill that would\nabolish New College of Florida and Florida Polytechnic University as\nindependent entities has been filed in the Florida House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legislation targets the two youngest members of\nFlorida\u2019s university system. New College became the 11th member of the system\nin 2001, while Florida Polytechnic became the 12th in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New College would become part of Florida State University\nunder the proposal, while Florida Polytechnic would become part of the\nUniversity of Florida. Each school would cease to exist as an independently\naccredited academic institution, with their properties transferred to FSU and\nUF.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
