The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has several significant nighttime detours scheduled for the I-4 and SR 33 (Commonwealth Avenue) interchange<\/strong> in Lakeland starting this Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These closures are part of the ongoing $197 million reconstruction project to improve the interchange and add wildlife crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upcoming Detour Schedule<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dates:<\/strong> Monday night, April 20<\/strong>, through Tuesday morning, April 21, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time:<\/strong> 9:30 PM to 6:00 AM<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closure Location<\/strong><\/td>Detour Route<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead>
SR 33 Northbound<\/strong> (at I-4)<\/td>Motorists will be detoured via University Blvd<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr>
SR 33 Northbound (Trucks)<\/strong><\/td>Heavy truck traffic will be routed onto I-4 Eastbound<\/strong> to Exit 559<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr>
I-4 Eastbound Exit 38 Off-Ramp<\/strong><\/td>Drivers will be directed to use Exit 33<\/strong> (SR 33\/Lakeland Hills Blvd) instead.<\/td><\/tr>
I-4 Eastbound On-Ramp<\/strong> (from SR 33)<\/td>Southbound SR 33:<\/strong> Follow local detour signs.
Northbound SR 33:<\/strong> Use SR 559<\/strong> to access I-4 Eastbound.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

  • Speed Limits:<\/strong> The speed limit remains reduced in the work zone. Please use caution as crews are also working on the SR 33 (Lakeland Hills Blvd) reconstruction further south.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Lake Hollingsworth:<\/strong> Unrelated to the I-4 project, milling and paving will also begin on Monday, April 20<\/strong>, on Lake Hollingsworth Drive, which may cause additional congestion if you are heading toward the college area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    FDOT suggests allowing extra travel time and keeping an eye out for portable message boards, as these schedules are always weather-dependent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
