It looks like you caught the latest update from the City Commission meeting. The $600,000 budget hike is quite a leap, especially considering it nearly doubles the city’s original fuel budget for the fiscal year.

Here are the quick hits on where that money is going and why:

The Financial Breakdown

  • Total Increase: $600,000 added to the fuel budget through September 30.

  • Diesel: $500,000 (The original $400,000 allocation was already almost gone).

  • Unleaded: $100,000.

    The “Why” Behind the Spike

The city pointed to a massive 53.7% surge in diesel prices since late February. In Polk County, diesel has been hovering around $5.44 per gallon recently—a stark contrast to the $3.54 we were seeing at the start of the year.

    The Bigger Picture

This isn’t the only “fuel” headache for Lakeland lately. Between this fleet adjustment and the Lakeland Electric fuel charge hike that kicked in on April 1 (jumping from $47 to $62 per 1,000 kWh), the city’s reserves are definitely taking a hit from the global energy market volatility.

It’s a tough break for the city’s fleet, especially with departments like solid waste and public works relying so heavily on diesel. Hopefully, those prices at the pump start trending back toward “reasonable” before the next budget review.
