The letter, originally submitted as part of his application to the Florida Bar, was recently obtained and published by The Intercept. The disclosure surfaced amidst a legal battle between Patel and The Atlantic over allegations regarding his current conduct.

Details of the Arrests

According to the 2005 letter, the two incidents occurred more than 20 years ago:

  • 2001 (Public Intoxication): While a junior at the University of Richmond, Patel was escorted out of a home basketball game by campus police for “excessive cheering.” He was arrested for public intoxication because he was underage (20) at the time and had consumed two drinks.

  • 2005 (Public Urination): While a law student at Pace University, Patel and a group of friends were walking home after drinking at local bars. He described the incident as a “gross deviation from appropriate conduct,” noting they were stopped by a police cruiser while attempting to relieve themselves.

    Context and Current Controversy

In the original letter, Patel apologized for the behavior, describing the events as an “anomaly” and “not representative” of his usual conduct.

The resurfacing of these decades-old arrests coincides with a high-profile $250 million defamation lawsuit Patel filed last week against The Atlantic. The magazine published a report alleging that Patel’s current drinking habits have led to “erratic behavior” and “unexplained absences” at the FBI—claims that Patel and his legal team vehemently deny as “politically motivated fabrications.”
