{"id":66169,"date":"2026-05-20T12:22:04","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T16:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=66169"},"modified":"2026-05-20T12:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T16:22:11","slug":"polk-county-animal-control-real-reform-or-better-pr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2026\/05\/20\/polk-county-animal-control-real-reform-or-better-pr\/","title":{"rendered":"Polk County Animal Control: Real Reform or Better PR?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Commissioner Michael Scott\" width=\"1110\" height=\"833\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qw-CqXvOlWo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 19, 2026, Animal Advocates noticed a major shift in tone from Polk County Commissioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time in eleven months, commissioners appeared calmer, asked more questions, and spoke far more kindly about animal welfare concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commissioner Michael Scott read a lengthy statement and presented photos showing improvements at Polk County Animal Control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Especially interesting: FOX 13 later aired a polished segment featuring many of the same talking points citizens heard during the meeting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/video\/fmc-4lgdjzjavt0r1xol\">https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/video\/fmc-4lgdjzjavt0r1xol<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, the two cameras reportedly present in the room belonged to First Amendment auditors\/YouTubers known for traveling the country documenting government interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the YouTuber influencers \u2014 who stated he attends city and county meetings across the country \u2014 appearing in Polk County may itself be a red flag that national attention is beginning to focus on this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many advocates, today also felt emotionally surreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People still remember Commissioner Braswell publicly stating on June 3, 2025:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>You\u2019re in the wrong place. We are not going to help you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several months later Commissioner Wilson stating ordinances would come to fruition if suggested by the sheriff or his office. Otherwise nothing would change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And more recently, once again Commissioner Braswell, April 21, 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>For the next two and a half years, I will do everything I can to make sure you guys get nothing, not a dime of county money, not any assistance&#8230; and I&#8217;ll advocate that my fellow commissioners do the same thing<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So after years of frustration, some citizens are now wondering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have advocates become so accustomed to dismissal that a softer tone, a few photos, a meeting with the new director, dog run at the shelter and other visual changes suddenly feel like major progress?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the larger issues have not disappeared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most concerning moments today involved statements regarding cats housed at Animal Control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On record, Commissioner Michael Scott appeared to state that cats do not leave their cages within a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That statement may raise questions about how Polk County interprets Florida Statute 828 with regards to humane confinement and exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the day, the real issue is not whether today\u2019s presentation sounded kinder or maybe even rehearsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real issue is proper quarantine procedures, disease prevention, broken kennels, no air conditioning, lack of monitoring cameras, Trap-Neuter-Release solutions, and the shelter\u2019s historically poor outcomes year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly, whether cats are still spending day after day confined inside cages with little opportunity for movement, enrichment and exercise while the public is shown images of \u201cimprovements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, Sheriff Judd\u2019s facility has repeatedly reported some of Florida\u2019s highest euthanasia totals and poorest cat outcomes over multiple consecutive years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On May 19, 2026, Animal Advocates noticed a major shift in tone from Polk County Commissioners.
