According to a 14-year-old student in the class, the teacher became frustrated that the students were not paying attention. She then took a charger cord, tied it around the doll’s neck, and hung it from a television monitor at the front of the classroom.

The Reaction: When students in the classroom protested, telling her the act was “wrong and racist,” she allegedly laughed it off. She told the students she did it to “get their attention” and claimed it was just a joke before taking the doll down.

The Video: The 14-year-old student recorded the incident on his phone to gather evidence. His mother later posted the video to social media, where it quickly went viral. Parents and community members expressed profound outrage, noting the display’s horrific resemblance to a lynching and the trauma it caused the students.

The Aftermath

Following the viral video and immediate public outcry, the Hillsborough County Public Schools district took swift action:

Termination: On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the school district confirmed that Savage’s employment was terminated, effective immediately.

State Reporting: The district reported the incident to the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Professional Practice Services, which could result in the revocation of her teaching certificate.

Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent Van Ayres released a statement condemning the display, calling it “unacceptable”
