Here is what happened based on their investigation:

The Incident: On April 16, 2026, a couple was dining at a sports bar in Lakeland. During the meal, their server reportedly captured the victim’s debit card information.

The Fraud: The server then used the stolen card details to rack up nearly $900 in fraudulent charges, which included spa services and cosmetic purchases. The charges included $600 at Posh Day Spa in Winter Haven, $93.88 at Chili’s Bar & Grille in Lakeland and $200 at Florida Cosmetic Center.

The Charges: Angela Borrero has been officially charged by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for the theft and the unauthorized transactions.

Borrero was already in the Polk County Jail when she was charged on Wednesday in this investigation.

She was charged with grand theft, scheme to defraud, use of another person’s ID, fraudulent use of a debit card, and violation of probation.

The sheriff’s office said Borrero has an “extensive criminal history,” with 20 prior felony convictions and 15 misdemeanor convictions.

Restaurant card theft is a frustratingly common crime. To protect yourself when dining out, cybersecurity experts often recommend using tap-to-pay options (like Apple Pay or Google Wallet) since they encrypt your transaction and prevent the server from walking away with your physical card. Regularly monitoring your bank statements for unexpected pending charges can also help you catch fraud immediately.

This recent incident was just announced by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
