When faced with an outage, you may find yourself wondering,\n\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d Yet power outages are often a result of events beyond\nanyone\u2019s control, including Lakeland Electric\u2019s. Here are the top eight things\nthat can cause power outages in Lakeland:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Animals: Ever seen a squirrel running along a power\nline? Although we try to avoid wildlife coming into contact with our electrical\nequipment, it can still happen from time to time; they can still get in and\ncause a short circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Thunderstorms: Extreme wind or thunderstorms with\nlightning can cause power outages. Wind can damage power lines, even knocking\nover poles, which results in a power outage until Lakeland Electric can fix it.\nWhen lightning strikes electrical equipment, damage may occur to our equipment,\nresulting in outages. If lightning does strike your home or business, call the\nfire department to assess the situation to make sure there is no fire in the\nbuilding; you will need to inspect your breakers to make sure they are\nfunctioning properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Accidents: Have you ever seen a car crash into a\nlight pole? Accidents can affect the power grid when they knock down power\npoles. Even if there is minimal damage, the power may be cut while repairs are\nperformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Excavations: Whether for building a foundation, gardening,\nplanting or uprooting a tree, or any other digging purpose, safe digging is\neveryone\u2019s responsibility. Excavations can cut into underground cables causing\ndamage, resulting in outages, injuries and sometimes death. That\u2019s why it is so\nimportant (actually it\u2019s the law) to call Sunshine 811 to have buried utilities\nlocated and marked before you dig. This is a free service for your safety, your\nfamily\u2019s safety and the safety of our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Maintenance: Every infrastructure requires\nimprovements and repairs to be dependable and sustainable. Our electricity\nservice is no exception. In these cases, when Lakeland Electric foresees\nrepairs, you\u2019ll likely be notified in advance. This way, you can be prepared\nfor the upcoming power outage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Trees: Rain and strong wind can cause trees to fall\non our power lines. Our team of arborists have a comprehensive vegetation\nmanagement plan and a responsive safety program to prevent contact with the\npower lines. If you are planning to remove or prune a tree near the lines, or\nif you have hired a residential tree service, please call or submit a Tree\nTrimming Request. We will inspect the tree and provide appropriate measures to\nkeep everyone safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Tornadoes: Severe thunderstorms and hurricanes can\nbring in tornadoes that cause more damage to our electrical grid and community\nthat result in extended outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Hurricanes: When there\u2019s a hurricane, large or small,\nthe power grid may be affected. Downed power lines and damaged equipment can\ncause extended power outages that last for three to seven days. Following a\nhurricane, it may take several days to restore services and clear roads. It may\neven take longer to remove all the debris from neighborhoods. We can\u2019t\nguarantee things will be fixed overnight but we can guarantee we won\u2019t rest\nuntil they are. 
\nThere are many other reasons that a power outage may occur, but these are the\nmost common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lakeland Electric strives to provide power quality and\nreliability to our customers. This means constant attention and investment in\nour electrical system. Every year, Florida is subject to hurricane-force winds\nthat can cause extensive damage to our electric utility infrastructure. We are\ncurrently working several projects as part of a system-wide, storm-hardening\neffort to prepare Lakeland Electric\u2019s infrastructure for major storm events.\nOccasionally outages will happen that are beyond our control, and when they do,\nyou\u2019ll want to be prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
