The roof restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s iconic Annie Pfeiffer Chapel<\/strong> is a major win for historic preservation right here in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n

As the crowning jewel of the “Child of the Sun” campus\u2014the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world\u2014the chapel has famously battled the elements for decades. Wright\u2019s experimental use of locally cast “textile” concrete blocks and sweeping cantilevered roofs gave the building its breathtaking aesthetic, but it also made it uniquely vulnerable to Florida\u2019s intense humidity, heavy rains, and hurricanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, water infiltration has caused the structural iron bars inside the textile blocks to corrode and expand, leading to cracking and spalling (chipping) of the concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Restoration Focus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Preserving a masterpiece like the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel requires an incredibly delicate balance of modern engineering and historic accuracy. The repair initiative focuses on several critical areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Waterproofing & Roof Remediation:<\/strong> Completely resealing and repairing the complex, soaring rooflines and the prominent glass “lantern” skylight to halt the water infiltration at its source.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Textile Block Stabilization:<\/strong> Carefully treating the internal iron rebar to stop corrosion and using specialized mortar mixes to repair the intricate, geometric concrete blocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Preserving the “Glass Butterflies”:<\/strong> Ensuring that the thousands of colorful, hand-poured glass inserts embedded into the concrete blocks\u2014which Wright designed to catch the sunlight like native flowers and butterflies\u2014remain protected and structurally sound during the heavy construction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
