        In the early 1900s, Lake Mirror wasn’t a scenic destination\u2014it was largely treated as a wild, overgrown sinkhole rimmed by old warehouses and a rail line.         Construction kicked off in 1926. The timing, however, couldn’t have been worse. The historic 1926 Miami Hurricane, coupled with a sudden banking collapse, caused the Florida real estate bubble to burst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Despite the looming economic ruin, Lakeland pushed forward to finish its grand project. The Promenade officially opened in 1928<\/strong>, costing the city roughly $750,000\u2014a massive sum at the time that contributed to city debt for decades, but ultimately secured Lakeland’s architectural legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        3. Decline, Rebirth, and a New Name<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        By the late 1970s and 1980s, the Promenade had fallen into severe disrepair. The concrete was crumbling, the lake was polluted, and parts of the structure were overgrown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Recognizing what they were losing, a massive community-driven restoration effort was launched in the late 1980s to rebuild the structures exactly as Leavitt had drawn them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
