Southeastern University has snagged the last available space\nfor rent at Lakeland Linder International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city commission approved a three-year contract with the\nuniversity to lease 3131 Flightline Drive starting July 15 to accommodate its\nnew aviation degree program launching this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That’s the only space we have left on the airport to\nlease,” Gene Conrad, director at Lakeland Linder, said. “We’ve been\nwaiting for someone to take that space because it needs some TLC.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conrad said the office building, previously used by general\naviation company Piper as a delivery center, has been sitting vacant for nearly\na decade. He believes the structure’s unusual design may be to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s a round building with offices along the\noutside,” he said. “It’s a difficult space to work with.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the contract, Southeastern will pay the city $1,402.50\na month plus taxes for the 1,530-square-foot space. Rent will increase by 2.5%\nannually beginning in July 2020 with the university having the option of two\nthree-year renewals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“SEU will lease and renovate it to their needs, which\nis great for us,” Conrad said. “It gets it back to an aviation\nuse.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

R. Joseph Childs, the university’s director of aviation\nprograms, said Southeastern plans to use the building to host aviation classes\nand part for administrative offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southeastern announced last fall a joint partnership\nwith International Aero Academy to offer an accelerated pilot training program.\nIt will offer a two-year path to associate’s degrees and a four-year path to\nbachelor’s degrees through an accelerated Federal Aviation Administration part\n141 pilot training framework. It recently received approval from regional\naccrediting officials, Childs said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re doing the improvements ourselves, so hopefully\nwe’ll get into the space later this week,” he said. “We hope to have\nit ready in time for the start of the fall semester.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university can receive up to a $27,000 credit for any\nbuilding improvements it makes, under its contract with the city. Half of the\ncredit will be applied against rent for the first year of the lease, and the\nother half to be divided over the remaining 24 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are very fortunate to be able to have it,”\nChilds said. “The city’s been really good to us and understanding of our\ntimeline.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the latest in a series of developments, starting with the May 17 announcement of Amazon building a seven-jet\ncargo hub<\/a>, creating rapid growth at Lakeland Linder. Conrad said he will\ncontinue pushing for more buildings, hangers and facilities at the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
