On Saturday, June 13, around 9:30 a.m., the live oak known as the \u201cGrandfather Oak\u201d at Bonnet Springs Park<\/a> developed a split down its middle, causing the iconic tree to fall. <\/p>\n\n\n

The Grandfather Oak is estimated to be around 200 years old.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

According to the Park, a maintenance worker was passing nearby and heard cracking coming from the oak tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cleared the area of visitors before the break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Park staff have cordoned off the area surrounding the tree and temporarily closed the canopy walk as a precaution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An arborist has inspected the oak tree, and park staff will weigh their options for the tree’s future.<\/p>\n\n\n
