What to expect

It looks like typical Florida summer weather is trying to crash the party, but it shouldn’t completely ruin your holiday plans. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms for both Friday, July 3rd, and Saturday, July 4th.

Here is exactly what you can expect for Lakeland’s major shows and how the rain might impact them:

1. Red, White & Kaboom (Lake Mirror)

  • When: Friday, July 3rd | Event starts at 6:00 PM; Fireworks at 9:00 PM

  • The Weather Impact: The rain chance is sitting at roughly 70% for Friday evening, with storms most likely to flare up late in the afternoon and into the early evening.

  • What to Expect: Organizers emphasize that the event will go on rain or shine. Because most Central Florida summer storms tend to cluster between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM before tapering off, there is a very good chance the weather will clear up just in time for the 9:00 PM launch.

  • The Rules: Personal handheld umbrellas are allowed if it drizzles. However, pop-up tents, beach umbrellas, or anything that requires staking into the ground is strictly prohibited.

    2. Flying Tigers Fireworks Spectacular (Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium)

    • When: Saturday, July 4th | Game starts at 5:00 PM; Fireworks immediately follow the game.

    • The Weather Impact: Independence Day itself carries an even higher 90% chance of rain and thunderstorms, heavily weighted toward the afternoon and evening.

    • What to Expect: Because the fireworks depend on the baseball game finishing, a rain delay during the game against the Dunedin Blue Jays will naturally push the fireworks back later into the evening. Keep an eye on the stadium’s social media updates if heavy downpours hit right around game time.

A Note on Lightning: While fireworks can safely launch in a light drizzle, lightning will cause immediate delays. If a thunderstorm parks itself directly over Lakeland at 9:00 PM, crews will wait for the cells to pass before firing.

Bring a poncho, keep an eye on local radar, and don’t give up on the shows too early—most of these summer storms move fast!
