The Davis family built a grocery empire. Then the sons inherited it. No requirement to work the registers, stock the shelves, or manage a single store. Within a generation, they ran the whole thing into bankruptcy. Gone.

Now drive through any Florida town and count the Publix locations. Then count the Winn-Dixies. That ratio tells you everything. The Jenkins family requires every single relative – no exceptions – to start at the bottom and earn every promotion. The result? Publix didn’t just survive. It became the dominant grocer in the Southeast, with employee ownership, industry-leading retention, and a culture so durable it’s practically recession-proof.

Same industry. Same state. Same starting point. Radically different outcomes.

The variable wasn’t luck. It wasn’t market timing. It was whether the people holding the reins had calluses on their hands from earning them.

That’s not just a business parable. It’s the 2026 Florida governor’s race in microcosm.

The $103 Million Question

Let’s talk about Byron Donalds and his war chest.

As of mid-July, Donalds has raised over $103 million – with $92 million of that funneled through his political committee. The single largest publicly reported donation? $10 million from Citadel’s Ken Griffin, a hedge fund billionaire. Right behind him: Pennsylvania billionaire Jeff Yass at $7.5 million. Those two men alone account for roughly a fifth of Donalds’ entire haul.

That’s not grassroots enthusiasm. That’s not a groundswell of small-dollar donors fired up about election integrity and the Constitution. That’s two of the wealthiest men in America writing checks the size of small-nation GDPs – and they didn’t get that wealthy by making bad investments.

Billionaires don’t give $10 million because they like your smile. They give $10 million because they expect a return.

And here’s the detail every Florida voter needs to sit with: when the campaign is over, Donalds keeps what’s left. That $70 million in cash on hand isn’t being refunded to the donors. It’s not going to Florida schools or infrastructure. Campaign finance laws allow surplus funds to be converted to personal use under certain conditions, and candidates sitting on nine-figure hauls don’t leave money on the table.

So let’s connect the dots. Billionaire donors pour in tens of millions. Candidate gets to keep the surplus after Election Day. And those same billionaires have policy wish-lists: regulatory changes, land use preferences, tax structures, all that affect 23 million Floridians.

“…Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare… for the love of money is the root of all evil.” – 1 Timothy 6:9-10

The Scripture doesn’t condemn money itself. It condemns the love of it. The ordering of your life around its accumulation, the willingness to take the shortcut, accept the strings-attached windfall, and pretend you’re still a free agent.

When the same campaign that’s sitting on $70 million sends out fundraising letters marked “END OF QUARTER EMERGENCY GIFT – PLEASE REPLY IN SEVEN DAYS!” with Trump’s face plastered on the envelope, something is deeply wrong. That’s not a campaign in need. That’s a payout structure disguised as public service.

The Man Who Won’t Debate

Then there’s the other tell.

Donalds won’t debate. Won’t hold open forums. Won’t subject himself to unscripted questioning in front of the voters he’s asking to hire him for the most powerful job in Florida.

A man who’s actually earned the position welcomes scrutiny. He’s got a record he can point to, votes he can defend, a legislative history that speaks for itself. He doesn’t need to hide behind paid media and closed-door fundraisers.

When your campaign strategy is to avoid the voters until after they’ve cast their ballots, you’re not running for office. You’re running a brand acquisition. And the brand is Florida.

Donalds’ name recognition sits at 75% – but name recognition isn’t the same thing as trust, and it’s certainly not the same thing as a record. Most Floridians couldn’t tell you a single piece of legislation he’s authored, a single fight he’s led, a single sacrifice he’s made for this state. Because there isn’t one. He was handed a safe congressional seat, handed Trump’s endorsement, handed $103 million from billionaires. None of it earned. All of it inherited.

The Speaker of the “Session of the Century”

Now look at Paul Renner.

You don’t become Speaker of the Florida House because someone wrote a check. You claw your way there through years of coalition-building, legislative combat, and proving – over and over – that you can deliver results. The members who elect the Speaker aren’t donors. They’re colleagues who’ve watched you in the trenches.

Renner’s speakership was called “the session of the century.” And the record backs it up:

Universal school choice – making Florida the undisputed champion of educational freedom

Permitless constitutional carry – eliminating government permission slips for Second Amendment rights

Property insurance reform – pulling the market back from the brink of collapse when companies were fleeing the state

ESG and DEI rollbacks – pushing back against the woke financial apparatus

Paid off state debt ahead of schedule while setting aside billions in reserves

Record infrastructure and water quality investments

Taxpayer rebates – $2.7 billion returned to Floridians because “people know how to spend their money better than government”

That’s not a press release. That’s a governing record. Every single item is public. Every vote is documented. Every floor speech is on the record. Renner has been tested in ways Donalds has actively avoided.

And he did it all while representing a relatively small district, Flagler County, which netted a quarter-billion dollars in appropriations during his speakership. Not because it was politically expedient. Because that’s what a representative does: take care of his people.

“To whom much is given, much is required.” – Luke 12:48

Renner earned every inch of his position. He didn’t inherit it from a billionaire’s checkbook. He built it through years of showing up, doing the work, and proving that his word meant something.

The General Election Math Nobody’s Talking About

Here’s where the Publix principle meets political reality: the primary isn’t the whole war. It’s the first battle. And the general election is where inherited power gets exposed.

Florida is a red state, but it’s not a guaranteed red state in a gubernatorial race – especially when the Democratic nominee is someone like former Congressman David Jolly. Jolly is a former Republican who knows exactly how to run against a candidate carrying baggage. He’s articulate, he’s disciplined, and he’ll have a unified Democratic Party behind him plus a slice of disaffected independents and moderate Republicans.

Byron Donalds cannot beat David Jolly.

It’s not complicated. Donalds carries vulnerabilities that Jolly would exploit with surgical precision:

$103 million from billionaires – Jolly frames it as a purchased candidacy, and he’s right

Refuses to debate – Jolly hammers him as afraid to face voters, and he’s right

No legislative record to defend – Jolly defines him as an empty suit with a Trump photo op, and he’s right

Keeps the leftover campaign cash – Jolly runs ads about the $70 million slush fund, and he’s right

Strings attached to every major donor – Jolly connects the dots between Griffin’s $10 million and whatever policy favors Donalds would owe, and he’s right

Every single one of those attacks lands. And Donalds has no answer because he’s never built one. He’s coasted on inherited momentum, the endorsement, the money, the name ID, without ever doing the work that makes a candidate battle-tested.

Paul Renner can beat David Jolly. And here’s why it’s not even close.

When Jolly tries to run against Renner’s record, he runs into a wall. What’s the attack?

He expanded school choice? Florida parents love school choice.

He passed constitutional carry? Florida gun owners showed up for that.

He fixed the insurance market? Every homeowner who kept their policy knows it.

He paid down debt and returned money to taxpayers? Good luck making that sound bad.

He took on DEI and ESG? The Republican base cheers that.

Renner is the clean candidate. There’s nothing for the Democrats to attack because his record is conservative accomplishment after conservative accomplishment – all of it popular, all of it defensible, all of it earned.

Donalds gives Jolly a target-rich environment. Renner gives him nothing.

The primary electorate needs to understand: nominating Donalds is nominating Jolly. The general election isn’t a coronation. It’s a contest. And Jolly will do to Donalds what Donalds has never had done to him – force him to answer questions without a script.

In Closing

My pastor’s sermon from 1 Timothy 6 is the right lens for this entire race:

“Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil.”

Not money. The love of it. The ordering of your entire life, and your entire campaign, around its accumulation.

One candidate was handed $103 million by billionaires who expect a return, refuses to face voters in debate, and gets to keep whatever’s left when the music stops. He hasn’t earned the position, and his campaign strategy proves he doesn’t respect it.

The other spent years in the legislative trenches, built a record of conservative wins that earned him the title “Speaker of the session of the century,” and has been tested in ways that forge a governor who’ll actually protect the people he serves.

Sacrifice others for personal gain – or sacrifice personal gain to serve others.

That’s the ballot question. Not Republican versus Democrat. Not Trump versus the establishment. It’s inherited power versus earned trust.

The Publix family understood that requiring every member to earn their way wasn’t just good business – it was good stewardship. The Winn-Dixie family learned too late that unearned position breeds contempt for the position itself.

Florida has 23 million people whose freedom, prosperity, and future hang on this choice. Byron Donalds has over 100 million reasons, all of them with dollar signs and donor strings, to put his benefactors first.

Paul Renner has a record of putting we the people first.

Don’t abuse the blessing of your vote. Give it to the man who earned it – and who can actually win in November.

The primary is August 18. Early voting starts August 8. Act like 23 million people are counting on you.

Because they are.

Saga Stevin July 26, 2026 The author is a born-and-raised Floridian with an eternal flicker of hope – and a sharp eye for sellouts.
