width:383px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/825340850_2806744599727624_8120462651836307343_n.webp?w=513&amp;ssl=1 513w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/825340850_2806744599727624_8120462651836307343_n.webp?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting October 1, 2026, Florida\u2019s new animal-welfare law will strengthen protections against animal cruelty and expand the state\u2019s public animal-abuse database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd34\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t6e\/1\/16\/1f534.png\"> WHAT CHANGES?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udccb\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t2b\/1\/16\/1f4cb.png\"> A stronger public database<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By January 1, 2027, Florida\u2019s Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is required to publish more identifying information about people convicted of qualifying animal-cruelty offenses or who enter guilty or no-contest pleas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The database is set to include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Name and aliases<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Date of birth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 County of conviction<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Charges<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Case number and outcome<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Identifying marks and tattoos<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Booking photograph<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\u23f3\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/tb7\/1\/16\/23f3.png\"> Records are generally posted for 3 years after a first misdemeanor conviction, 5 years after a first felony conviction, and 10 years after a subsequent conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\u26a0\ufe0f\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/tdc\/1\/16\/26a0.png\"> NEW FELONY OFFENSES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults who cause or entice a minor to commit aggravated animal cruelty, or who commit certain aggravated cruelty offenses in a minor\u2019s presence, can face a third-degree felony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law also creates new felony offenses involving minors and animal fighting, baiting, and sexual abuse involving animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udc67\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t8d\/1\/16\/1f467.png\"> WHEN CHILDREN COMMIT CRUELTY<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juvenile courts must order a psychological evaluation for minors who commit specified animal-cruelty offenses and, when recommended, counseling or treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udc3e\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/tde\/1\/16\/1f43e.png\"> WHY THIS MATTERS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An animal-abuse record should not simply disappear into a filing cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shelters, rescues, and families need reliable information when deciding whether someone has a history of cruelty\u2014while the law also provides a process for removing information when a conviction is overturned or the relevant criminal record is sealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Animals cannot check someone&#8217;s history before trusting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Florida\u2019s next test will be whether these stricter rules actually help prevent animals from falling into the hands of repeat abusers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udc3e\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/tde\/1\/16\/1f43e.png\"> Accountability matters.
