Today, Polk County was put on notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some reason, when we talk about Florida\u2019s shelter crisis, we talk about Miami-Dade. Broward. Palm Beach. Orange. Hillsborough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we don\u2019t talk enough about Polk County, FL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sat through more than six hours of a County Commission meeting just for my three minutes at a microphone because the numbers coming out of Polk County deserve three minutes of uncomfortable attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My goal was to make sure the Commissioners knew that in 2024, while Florida shelters collectively achieved an approximately 88% live-outcome rate, Polk County Animal Control was at approximately 58%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That 400+ dogs and cats died in Polk\u2019s care from causes other than euthanasia\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That more than 500 animals were recorded as lost or escaped\u2026(?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because \u201cwe have too many animals\u201d stops being an acceptable explanation when other counties are dealing with the same crisis and producing dramatically different outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I turned around and looked directly at the taxpayers sitting behind me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because they are paying for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deserve to know what their money is producing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deserve to ask why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And their elected officials deserve to feel uncomfortable answering those questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My goal was to remind the Commission of something else:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polk County is developing a reputation it does NOT want to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reputation among rescuers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reputation among advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reputation among people outside its borders who are increasingly being asked to clean up the consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if nothing changes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will make sure that reputation is known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not with rumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not with drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With their own numbers. Their own records. Their own outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because what happens in Polk County does not stay in Polk County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals bred, neglected, abandoned, and failed there eventually become somebody else\u2019s emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today was a perfect example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I entered Polk County asking its leadership to take responsibility for what is happening to its animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So today wasn\u2019t about three minutes at a microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was about making sure Polk County knows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People are watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are looking at the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are comparing the outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are asking where the money is going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are documenting what happens when people ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we are going to keep talking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polk County has an opportunity to change the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But ignoring it is no longer an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rescue Dog Network is paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
