Lakeland dog lovers cheer! Another dog park is coming to the\ncity, this one located in the city’s downtown area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new park is called “Central Bark” Construction will begin in September and the park is expected to open by fall 2020. Estimated cost $350,000 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, downtown Lakeland residents we spoke to say there\naren’t many places to take their dogs for fun and exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can\u2019t wait. I just cannot wait,” Denise Pech she said.\n“There\u2019s a lot of dogs downtown. Here in the building where I live there\nare a lot of dogs, so that is going to be great.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parks and Recreation Director Bob Donahay said there was a\nbig push four to five years ago from downtown residents to build a dog park.\nHowever, the group was only able to raise around $7,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donahay said lack of funding held the project\nup.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe did three dog parks in Lakeland and we were very\nsuccessful with them,” he explained. “Thanks to our city manager and\ncommission, we were able to move some things around to make this happen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re not going to use grass,” he said. “We\u2019re going to use artificial turf, which is very expensive but it makes so much sense because you can\u2019t wear it out. Then you have modules for the dogs to run, to play up on, jump on,\u201d Donahay said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog park will be smaller than the city\u2019s other parks. In\naddition, big and small dogs won\u2019t be separated at “Central\nBark.”  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
