On June 3, 2025, animal advocates stood before the Polk County Board of County Commissioners asking for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commissioner Bill Braswell had a message for them\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the county\u2019s official meeting minutes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis Board is not going to change the Sheriff\u2019s policies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read that again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting minutes also document Braswell explaining that Sheriff Grady Judd controls Animal Control and that advocates should take their complaints directly to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commission Chair Rick Wilson offered a different response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to do what we can and go from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what happened next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advocates returned in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They returned in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And according to local reporting, commissioners did not respond to their concerns during those public-comment sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, published figures attributed to Polk County Animal Control records show 5,131 animals euthanized in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be clear, that number alone doesn\u2019t tell us how many deaths were preventable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it certainly gives the public reason to ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commissioners have argued that the independently elected sheriff controls shelter operations. The Sheriff\u2019s Office has defended its animal care and subsequently reported facility improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the questions about accountability remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc3e\" What animal welfare ordinances have commissioners considered?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc3e\" What measurable changes have been made to improve live outcomes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc3e\" What independent oversight exists?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc3e\" What additional reforms are being considered?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public deserves a documented accounting of what has changed since advocates first raised these concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An independently elected sheriff is not exempt from public scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And county commissioners still have responsibilities to the people they represent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
