The Truth Revealed

Publix does not intentionally jack up regular shelf prices immediately before putting an item on BOGO (Buy One, Get One free). However, the perception that BOGO deals aren’t as cheap as expected comes down to two main factors: higher baseline pricing and Florida-specific promotion rules.

1. High Regular Shelf Prices

Publix generally maintains higher standard retail prices than competitors like Walmart, Aldi, or Target.

  • The Reality: The shelf price displayed during a BOGO sale is the standard, everyday Publix price for that item. Medium

  • The Comparison: Because Publix’s regular price on a single item might be higher than Walmart’s base price, getting two items on BOGO brings the per-unit cost down to roughly the same (or slightly better than) discount-store pricing.

    2. Florida BOGO Rules vs. Other States

How BOGO sales work in Florida specifically affects your total savings compared to other regions:

    Location
BOGO Policy
Example ($6 Regular Item)

    Florida
True BOGO: You must purchase two items to get the deal. The first scans at full price, and the second scans for $0.00.
Buy 2 for $6.00 total.
    (Buy 1 = Pay $6.00 full price)

Other States (GA, TN, VA, etc.)
Half-Price BOGO: Single BOGO items scan at 50% off.
Buy 1 for $3.00 total.

Note: In Florida, if you only need one item, you pay full price and miss out on the discount entirely. The only exception in Florida is if only a single unit remains on the shelf; customer service may manually give you that item at 50% off

    3. Timing & Price Adjustments

Shoppers often report seeing a price increase right around a BOGO promotion. This typically happens due to:

    • General Price Increases: When manufacturers raise prices, retailers update tags across all inventory. If a product’s price goes up globally the same week or month it goes on sale, the BOGO price tag reflects the new, higher base price.

    • Post-Sale Increases: Manufacturers occasionally schedule permanent price increases to take effect immediately after a promotional BOGO cycle finishes.

Summary Tips for Shopping BOGOs in Florida

      1. Focus on Per-Unit Cost: Calculate the price per item or unit weight when buying two to verify it beats regular competitor prices.

      2. Stick to What You Use: Since Florida requires buying two items to unlock the savings, stick to shelf-stable, frozen, or non-perishable goods so the second item doesn’t go to waste.
